GMG Racing's career weekend at Circuit of The Americas (COTA) across four classes in three different SRO America sports car racing series set a new standard, even for the multiple championship-winning California-based racing team, with a total haul of six victories and a nearly-perfect nine podium appearances in the weekend's 10 races.
In total, GMG Racing drivers Kyle Washington, Tom Sargent, John Capestro-Dubets, Andre Solano and Team Principal and Founder James Sofronas all visited the victory lane podium at least once in a competitive weekend of racing in SRO America GT World Challenge America powered by AWS, GT America powered by AWS and the McLaren Trophy America racing series.
"Grateful, proud, humble and appreciative are just a few words to describe my thoughts of the team and drivers after this weekend’s success," Sofronas said. "To see the GMG Racing team perform at this level, and have our client’s success on track evident in our trophy collection after the weekend makes me extremely proud. No one sees the work behind the scenes, the long nights for the crew, the advanced planning and complex logistics management required to run four cars and two different manufacturers on the same weekend, but these guys always give 100%."
Washington continued to stay hot in 2025 sprint race competition with his second GT America victory of the year in Saturday's first 40-minute race in his in his No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R. Starting from the pole, Washington controlled the race from flag-to-flag for his second victory of the season in as many race weekends after also winning on Sunday in last month's season-opening weekend at Sonoma Raceway.
"We got a true win Saturday as I really don't count the Sonoma rain win, but it all makes you feel good, really good," Washington said. "On Sunday, we had an unbelievable battle for the win, one of the best races I've had, back and forth and I led. GT America has been a great series for me, and I think my third or fourth year here. Starting out, I'd be getting lapped, honestly, from other GT3s. Then I picked up a third, then a little better, it's gone better and better, and now don't you know we're winning."
Later on Saturday, GMG Racing's twin McLaren Artura Trophy Evo entries began a weekend of dominance with Pro and Am-class victories in the new McLaren Trophy America series. John Capestro-Dubets, who won the inaugural series race with GMG at Sonoma, joined debuting co-driver Andre Solano for a come-from-behind Pro and overall victory in the No. 4 GMG Racing McLaren Trophy Evo. They were joined on the winner's podium by Sofronas, who secured the Am victory from the overall pole in the No. 14 GMG Racing McLaren Trophy Evo.
"This is a blessing, just a blessing," Castro-Dubets said. "James put me in a good car. Put me in a good car with great teammates, you know, and our engineering team is just so strong on this car. That's just some of the positives along with all of the excitement we're seeing through our mechanics. It is all really translating into the performance of the car, and I'm just really excited to see where this all goes."
Not to be outdone, the No. 4 and No. 14 McLaren teams raised the bar even higher in Sunday's final 50-minute race. Sofronas and Capestro-Dubets - aka JCD - locked out the front row with the respective outright and Am-class and Pro poles and went on to take a pair of convincing class and overall triumphs. Solano joined JCD for the overall and Pro win while Sofronas won again in Am while crossing the line second overall.
Even better, Sofronas won the Am class in a special Friday "makeup race" for Sonoma's Sunday round that was rained out. As GMG Racing's owner, Sofronas operates with a "client's first" way of doing business, but at COTA he was in the proud and privileged position of racing to keep up with his client's winning ways. His perfect three-for-three McLaren Am-class victories accounted for half of GMG's six race win total at COTA.
"My drives are always just the extra icing on the cake, a bonus in my life, as I care more about my client’s results than my own," Sofronas said. "But it’s nice to get us all on the podium when possible. We continue to learn, to push, to expand and we look forward to continuing with our success, as we all know these kind of days don’t come easy. We are already back at the shop continuing our push for excellence."
Solano races McLarens and Porsches in his native Costa Rica and was making his COTA debut.
"I'm just happy to be here," Solano said. "It's been a great weekend, and working with the team and JCD helped me a lot through learning a track and even getting into it! All around it was a great weekend working with professionals, and GMG Racing gave me a great car."
Washington and his coach and co-driver Sargent also joined the podium party at COTA in GT World Challenge America competition. Washington survived an early hit-and-run incident in a multi-car melee to hand the No. 32 GMG Racing Porsche 911 GT3 R off to Sargent, who brought the car home in third-place in Pro-Am. The finish is a season-best so far for Washington and Sargent in GT World Challenge in the first two race weekends of the year at COTA and Sonoma.
"To see Kyle take a dominant win on Saturday in GT America and then back it up with a podium in GT World Challenge with Tom, that was a big highlight from the weekend," Sofronas said. "To know we have the fastest Porsche on the grid, thanks to our top technicians and engineers dialing that car in, makes us continue to push the limits of the R platform to find more speed, and it shows.
Next up for GMG Racing on the SRO America schedule is Sebring International Raceway, May 16 – 18.
