On top of all the GT and touring car action that will be coming to Sebring International Raceway from May 16th to 18th as part of the SRO America race weekend, the atmosphere at the track will be electrifying for another exciting reason as well. As part of the action-packed event, a new generation of innovators will also be hitting the track, but with a twist, as students get behind the wheel of electric go-karts they built themselves.
Florida Power & Light Company (FPL) supports high school students from across the state who will take part in the Electrathon showcase. This unique competition is part of the Electrathon America program, which gives students a hands-on opportunity to dive into real-world STEM concepts by designing, constructing and racing their own single-seat electric vehicles.
The objective for the competitors is to see which vehicle can travel the farthest distance on a single battery charge, a challenge that tests not only speed and power, but also energy efficiency, aerodynamics and innovative engineering.
FPL has proudly supported Electrathon for three years, providing electric go-kart build kits and training materials for students and educators at 25 high schools, spanning from Miami to Pensacola.
“We want students to walk away with an enhanced desire to explore STEM opportunities in the classroom and after they graduate,” said Isabella Burckhardt, Community Relations Specialist with FPL. “It is an absolute privilege for FPL to support this program, as we hope students are inspired to pursue future careers in engineering and mobility.”
At Sebring, participating teams will showcase their creations and put their skills to the test on a custom go-kart track at the Speedway, providing an unforgettable experience within a setting surrounded by premier sportscars and top tier racing talents.
For fans and families attending SRO America at Sebring, the Electrathon event offers a unique chance to cheer on these student teams and witness firsthand how STEM education can drive collaboration and forward-thinking.
Don’t miss the FPL Electrathon event at Sebring International Raceway, happening alongside all the GT World Challenge America, GT America powered by AWS, Pirelli GT4 America, TC America powered by Skip Barber Racing School, and Toyota GR Cup action. It’s a weekend of high-speed thrills, technological advancement, and community spirit.
